Emmons named Legislator of the Year by National Retail Federation

Michigan Senator Joanne Emmons (R-Big Rapids) was named 2001 Legislator of the Year by the National Retail Federation (NRF).

Emmons was nominated for the national award by the Michigan Retailers Association (MRA) for her support of retail. She will receive her award at NRF's annual Legislative Conference in Colorado Springs on August 5.

Emmons has consistently supported policies that benefit the state's retail industry, which provides $115 billion in goods and services to Michigan consumers annually and employs nearly one in five Michiganians. She has sponsored legislation to reform item pricing laws in Michigan and require "remote sellers," such as Internet and catalog merchants, to collect state sales and use taxes on customer purchases.

In 1998 MRA's nominee for Legislator of the Year, then-Rep. Kirk Profit (D-Ypsilanti), also received the national award from NRF.

The Michigan Retailers Association is the unified voice of retailing in Michigan and the nation's largest state trade association of general merchandise retailers. MRA's more than 5,500 retail business members operate more than 12,000 stores across the state.
