McCurry honored for leadership
by Sears African American Network
Joseph McCurry, chair of the Michigan Retailers Association
(MRA) Executive Committee, was recognized by the African American Network
at Sears for his achievements with the company and his contributions to
the African American Network.
McCurry retired on January 31 as general manager of the
Detroit district for Sears, Roebuck and Co., where he led the district's
16 stores and more than 4,000 employees to several record-breaking years.
He previously served as a store general manager in Illinois and Wisconsin
and began his career with Sears in 1964.
McCurry was honored at a February 5 meeting of the MRA
Board of Directors. He has served on the board since 1997 and is in his
second year as chair of the Executive Committee.
The resolution honoring McCurry cited his management philosophy
based on "integrity, bold thinking and teamwork" and his "courage, determination,
conviction and decisiveness" in guiding the development of the African
American Network at Sears. McCurry was presented with a framed print by
Samuel Akainyah, "Bequeathing the Nation," commissioned by Sears to commemorate
Black History Month 2002.
The Michigan Retailers Association is the unified voice
of retailing in Michigan and the nation's largest state trade association
of general merchandise retailers. MRA's more than 5,500 retail business
