
Gazelle Sports honored
for promoting fitness
Gazelle
Sports was named 2001 Regional Corporate Sponsor
of the Year by the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and
Sports for its efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and physical activity.
A specialty sporting goods retailer with stores in downtown
Kalamazoo, downtown Holland and Grand Rapids, Gazelle Sports has sponsored
numerous races, fun runs and health promotion programs.
The store promotes youth fitness through involvement in
the Feelin' Good Mileage Club, Girls on the Run, Kids Klassic run and
more. It also offers training programs for participants running distance
races, from five kilometers to marathons.
Gazelle Sports sponsors the Wellness Connection Conference
and supports Walk Michigan and Employee Health and Fitness Day. The company
also administers Gazelle Speaks, a free community education program offering
information on proper exercise footwear and apparel.
Wayne State University has renamed its College of Pharmacy
and Allied Health Professions after Eugene Applebaum, founder of Arbor
Drugs.
Applebaum, a Detroit native and graduate of Wayne State,
contributed $5 million to help fund construction of a new, state-of-the-art
teaching and research facility for the College of Pharmacy. His gift is
the largest individual donation ever made to Wayne State. Applebaum's
friends and business associates contributed an additional $2 million in
his honor.
Applebaum founded his first drug store in Dearborn in
1963 and banded with five others in 1974 to form Arbor Drugs. He grew
the chain to 208 stores before selling it to CVS Corp. in 1998.
Michigan shoe retailer Paul Muller will be honored at
the National Shoe Retailers Association conference in Las Vegas.
Muller, the owner of Muller's Family Shoe Centers
in Grand Rapids, is immediate past chairman of NSRA. He will be recognized
at a February 9 reception for his contributions to the association.
Playmakers, a Lansing-area retailer of athletic
footwear and apparel, is moving from the Meridian Mall in Okemos to a
larger freestanding store recently vacated by Barnes & Noble. The
new store will open in May after extensive renovations, including the
addition of a large waterfall, according to owner Curt Munson.
Country Home Creations in Flint received an international
food industry award for its Country Salsa Mix.
The company, which produces a variety of dip mixes, won
a 2002 Scovie Award for excellence in hot and spicy foods, presented by
Fiery-Foods & Barbecue Magazine. Country Salsa Mix received
third place in the Dry Salsa Mix category, out of 600 products competing
in 60 categories of "fiery foods."
Country Home Creations also won a Scovie Award in 2000
for its Country Jalapeno Dip Mix.
