40 scholarships awarded for
upcoming school year

A record 40 students will head to college this fall with a total of $36,000 in financial assistance from the Michigan Retailers Association.

They’ll each receive a scholarship funded by the Michigan Retailers Foundation, a nonprofit educational organization established by MRA to benefit MRA members and their employees and families.

Thirty-two will receive $1,000 for one year at a public or private college or university and eight will receive $500 for one year at a community college.

This year’s number of scholarships is 60 percent higher than last year, when 25 scholarships were awarded. The higher number is the result of the foundation’s increased assets; interest income from foundation assets provides the funds for the scholarships.

“We’re delighted to see the continued growth in the foundation and in the number of scholarships we can offer,” said MRA Chairman and CEO Larry Meyer. “Our scholarship program is a top priority for the Board of Directors because it is an excellent way to assist young people in the retail community with their education.”

MRA’s scholarship program is managed by Scholarship Program Administrators, Inc., in Nashville, Tennessee. A panel of educators selects the recipients based on above-average academic achievement and extracurricular involvement. Financial need is not a consideration.

The following students will receive scholarships for the 2007-08 academic year from the Michigan Retailers Association.

Retailers become ‘champs’

Three MRA board members have advanced to the Champions Club level of “Links to a Legacy,” the contribution program that funds the Michigan Retailers Foundation scholarship program.

Mark Schrag, Joe McCurry and Barb Stein have each made regular contributions to the Foundation to reach this level.

Contributors who have given or pledged a total of $4,000 or more to the Foundation are named to the Champions Club. Contributors who donate or pledge at least $10,000 over their lifetime join the top Legacy Club and have a permanent scholarship established in their name or in honor of a parent, company or other designee.

Board members who have reached the Legacy Club level include D. Larry Sherman, Peter Sobelton and Joe Swanson, who has secured major contributions from his employer, Target Corporation.

“Dedicated retailers are the reason the Foundation is thriving,” said MRA CEO and Chairman Larry Meyer.

“Without this spirit of giving back, we would not be assisting record numbers of students with their college education. I encourage other retailers to start building their own legacy.”
