Since we put the Michigan Retail Index survey online at the beginning of this year, members find it easier to provide comments. We will publish a selection of members’ comments each month.

No names are included because survey participation is anonymous.

“We had a great summer, but now people are looking at the state’s economy and becoming very cautious about spending. They are not on vacation now! If [the state] could keep pushing our state for tourism, it might take the place of some of the jobs that were lost in the manufacturing industry. Help us get the word out to our own Michiganders, other states and countries.”

“I’m worried. This is the worst I have ever seen. With all the bad news and the increase in taxes, and the potential for more layoffs, why would anyone want to spend their money? Our government is certainly not helping us—just the opposite!”

“I am disgusted with the way our state’s budget was solved (and I believe the budget is still not solved and very much still in trouble)…. What we need is not politicians but a collection of our brightest business students doing what seems to be so impossible for our politicians: produce a balanced budget that makes sense and is fair to all.”

“Michigan tax increases are scaring me! … Tell the state to live in its present revenue and give us a chance to grow our businesses, which will bring increased revenues to the state.”

Survey responders
win cash

Tom Miller, of Wilbur’s Furniture in Coldwater, won $25 just for responding to the online Michigan Retail Index Survey in October.

Miller was selected in a random drawing among business owners who told us they completed the survey in October. The survey drawing will end in December.

For your last chance to win: complete the survey, let us know via e-mail, and your name will be part of the next drawing.

If you aren’t receiving an invitation to complete the online survey, it probably means we don’t have your e-mail address. Send an e-mail to mra@retailers.com to be added to our e-mail distribution list.
