Notice from MI WIC: Temporary substitute formulas ending Feb. 28

NOTICE FROM MI WIC: TEMPORARY SUBSTITUTE FORMULAS ENDING FEBRUARY 28

To assist clients during the formula shortage, Michigan WIC received approval from USDA FNS (United State Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service) and their formula contractor, Abbott Laboratories, for the addition of temporary substitute formula choices. For the past several months, retailers have been selling many lines of formula to serve the needs of families coming to their stores.

The final day to transact expanded non-Similac formula choices, including Enfamil, Gerber, and store brand formulas, is February 28, 2023. As retailers and wholesalers plan store inventory to support this transition, WIC encourages them to ensure their store(s) have adequate inventory of Similac branded formulas prior to discontinuation of the substitute formulas. To summarize:

Effective March 1, 2023:

  • Continue Similac brand infant formula, including alternative sizes and imported Similac formula
  • Discontinue all competitor brands

Effective May 1, 2023:

  • Continue contract WIC size powder formulas (12.4-12.6 oz)
  • Discontinue all other Similac alternative sizes, including imported Similac formula

The table below reflects Similac brand products that will continue to be Michigan WIC authorized through April 30, 2023.

The standard WIC approved size of Similac Total Comfort (12.6 oz powder) may not be readily available for ordering as Abbott is still increasing production. Similac Total Comfort (28 oz powder) imported from Spain is available to order (see above chart for product highlighted in yellow; and UPC to assist with ordering). WIC encourages you to take steps to ensure you have some Total Comfort formula available at your store.

Please contact the Michigan WIC office with any issues stocking Similac brand formulas or with any questions or concerns at mdhhs-wicvendor@michigan.gov or 517.335.8937.
