LANSING, Mich. – Michigan faces an opportunity to generate over 14,000 new jobs and a $1.1 billion increase in value-added to the state’s economy if residents redirected just 10% of their online spending back to local retailers. This notable potential outcome is unveiled in the newest Buy Nearby Economic Impact Study, conducted annually by Michigan Retailers Association (MRA) and Public Sector Consultants (PSC).
Michigan is home to 91,388 retail establishments representing 8% of all Michigan private business establishments. These establishments employ almost 450,000 employees, or 11% of Michigan’s total workforce.
In 2025, an estimated $33.4 billion in sales came from Michigan’s remote sales, many of which promote out-of-state business.
The study highlights the effect that shifting just 10% of this spending back into Michigan could simultaneously generate $1.7 billion in gross economic output, boost labor income by nearly $674 million, and create job opportunities for 5% of Michigan’s unemployed workforce.

Retailers across Michigan will celebrate Buy Nearby Weekend from October 2-4. MRA promotes the weekend-long event annually, shining a spotlight on Michigan’s retailers and encouraging consumers to shop local during the first full weekend of October. During this period, many retailers will host special events and offer sales to drive more foot traffic to their stores.
