When a medical emergency happens within your store, time is of the essence.

First Aid and Emergency Kits

Have a first aid kit readily available. Decide the best place to keep it–near entries and exits, near your point-of-sale system, or more centralized in your space.

Purchase a pre-packaged first aid kit, or stock your own with an array of bandages, gauze pads, cold packs, open wound antiseptic, athletic tape, etc. 

Add an all-encompassing emergency kit to your collateral with items like batteries, flashlights, bottled water, and dry goods to have on-hand and use during severe weather, power outages, and more generic disasters.

Additional Medical Equipment On-Hand

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is used when someone is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The machine monitors heart-rate activity and can deliver an electric shock to help reset the rhythm if needed.

According to the American Red Cross, if individuals were properly trained or certified to use an AED and had access to an AED, it could save 50,000 lives per year.

Trainings

In-person and online trainings exist for businesses to get certified. If your budget allows, having more than one individual professionally trained to intervene in the event of a medical emergency can help save a life.

Consider hosting a training with local medical responders to help your staff gain knowledge on how to help in certain instances. Local connections will also lead to ongoing relationships with the individuals who will respond to the emergency, and the line of communication will stay open and strong between the department and your business.
