William J. Hallan promoted to Executive Vice President

LANSING – The Michigan Retailers Association (MRA) Board of Directors has promoted William J. Hallan to executive vice president, chief operating officer and general counsel.

Hallan joined the organization in 2011 as vice president and general counsel. He expanded his responsibilities to include oversight of the Association’s legislative advocacy program in February 2012 and overall operations in September 2013. He was promoted to chief operating officer and general counsel and named to the MRA board in 2014.

The latest promotion adds greater responsibility to his constantly increasing duties. It also designates him as acting chief executive in the absence of the president and CEO.

He also serves as executive vice president, chief operating officer and general counsel for Retailers Insurance Company, which was established by MRA.

Prior to joining MRA, Hallan was a litigator in the Dykema Gossett law firm’s Bloomfield Hills office. He is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Toledo School of Law and a graduate of Denison University.

Governor Rick Snyder appointed Hallan to serve on the state Organized Retail Crime Board following passage of the 2012 legislation creating the board. Hallan was recognized by the Michigan Society of Association Executives (MSAE) earlier this year as a “Rising Leader” in the community of state associations. The MSAE award was given to outstanding association executives under 35 or in the first five years of working in the association or hospitality industries.

An Okemos resident, Hallan and his wife, Michelle, have two children.

Michigan Retailers Association represents nearly 5,000 member businesses and their more than 15,000 stores and websites. MRA has been a trusted business resource for 75 years and provides cost-saving membership services such as expert credit card processing, business and personal insurances, legislative advocacy and discounts on shipping. It also operates the Buy Nearby campaign, a “shop local” program for the entire state.
